A dream stealer will discourage you and tell you anything to keep you from moving forward.
Let me tell you a story. A true story.
My story of the 6th grade dream stealer
This happened when I was in the 6th grade.
One day in class, the teacher wanted to start a discussion with the class.
The topic was, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
I saw this as an opportunity to shout out my dream to the world.
That opportunity didn’t come.
Right after the teacher asked the question, she said, “I don’t want to hear any dreams about being a singer, movie star, or basketball player. What’s the chance of you doing that? You have to make a lot of shots to be in the NBA. I want to hear a real career.”
I tell you this, when she said that, I could feel I bunch of kids heart’s breaking in the room including mines.
You can tell the mood changed in the whole room.
The discussion continued. But you can tell that the kids were settling for careers that they never wanted to do in the first place. They settled because they felt that the adult had all the answers.
The reality is, that same adult had dreams of her own. She was just disappointed that she never went for what she really wanted. So she felt that it was “wisdom” to tell kids that they couldn’t do what they wanted to in life.
Oh, by the way. My dream as a child was to be an NBA star like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do something. If you want it, go get it! Period!
